Provincial Grand Lodge of Sutherland History

On Tuesday, 31st of August 1926 at 3 o'clock in the afternoon a meeting was held in the Masonic Hall Dornoch for the purpose of forming a Provincial Grand Lodge in the County of Sutherland.

It was decided to form a Provincial Lodge and Rev. Bro. Dr. C.D. Bentinck seconded by Bro. J. Hynd P.M. Proposed that Capt. Bro. P. Egerton should be Provincial Grand Master of Sutherland and Bro. J.H. Arthur should be Provincial Secretary.

The Headquarters of Provincial was to be Dornoch and the regalia was to be coloured green.

Sadly Bro. Capt. P. Egerton RN. was never installed as he was killed in a motor cycle accident and was buried in South Queensferry on the date on which he should have been installed. The Rev. Dr. C.D. Bentinck D.D. was therefore appointed Provincial Grand Master.

The Provincial Regalia was insured for £100.00 which included the Provincial Grand Masters Regalia which had been bequeathed by Bro. Capt. P. Egerton RN. On 27th September 1927 at 6.30pm in the Council Chambers, Dornoch, the Most Worshipful Grand Master Mason of Scotland Bro. The Honorable The Lord Blythwood, KGVO, DL, JP. installed Bro. Rev. Charles Donald Bentinck, D.D. as Provincial Grand Master of Sutherland along with the Commissioned Officers and all the other Office-bearers. Present were representatives from all the Lodges in Sutherland namely:- Lodge St Gilbert No 790, Lodge Donan No 933, Lodge St Devenic No 1277, Lodge St Andrew No 1318, Lodge Loch Shin No 1352. The newly installed Provincial Grand Master offered Honorary Membership of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Sutherland to the Grand Master Mason who accepted and took an obligation.
